Liberia, a tiny West African state has just emerged from more than a decade of civil conflict. The human and material resource needs for rehabilitation of the nation’s infrastructures and basic social service systems can not be overstated. Critical is to maintain the fragile peace nurtured by the international community costing hundreds of thousands million of dollars for non tangible, but rather life saving humanitarian assistance. The constructive engagement of youths which constitute 60 – 65 of the population of Liberia is crucial to maintaining peace and this can be achieved through a wide range of economic recovery programs including education, skills training for jobs and entrepreneurship, youth development programs among others,

 

Booker Washington Institute (BWI) which is Liberia’s largest and most viable vocational/technical secondary school has a pivotal role in postwar Liberia economic recovery and in sustaining the fragile peace nurtured by the Government of Liberia and the international community. It has a historic reputation of being a reservoir of middle level technicians and managers making immense contributions to both public and private sectors. The areas of specialization areGeneral Agriculture, Auto Mechanic, Auto Electricity, General Building Construction, Accounting, Computer Literacy, Office Assistant, Electricity, Electronics and Homes Arts Education.The Endowment Fund is intended to implement the programs for rehabilitation and development of infrastructures, improvement of quality of education and increased access to vocational/technical education as stated below:

  • Internet expansion (computers, V-Sat., installation, 6 mos. Premium) $17,500
  • Internship intensification and follow-up (logistics, communication, travels) $45,000
  • Curriculum improvement (Review, technical textbooks, laboratory equipment) $180,000
  • Agriculture farm expansion for sustainability (Equipment, tools, seeds) $120,000
  • Computer program expansion (Computers, printers, accessories, tools, installation, etc.) $80,000
  • New academic building (Construction materials, furnisher, lab. materials) $680,000
  • Rehabilitation of existing infrastructure (Construction materials) $720,000
  • Staff training/retraining (Scholarships, funds) $250,000
  • 180 KVA hydro electrification plant (Construction materials, high tech labor) $200,000
