Expanding BWI Technical Programs Needs Concerted Efforts, Says Madam Ellen Johnson Sirleaf

President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf says youth empowerment programs, during the incoming administration, will focus on improving the capacities of technical programs in places like the Booker Washington Institute (BWI).

The President said expanding the technical program at BWI is one of the surest ways of building the technical capacities of and exposing young people to vocational skills which guarantee them employment opportunities.

According to an Executive Mansion release, President Sirleaf gave the assurance recently when the President of the BWI Alumni Association, Mr. Jonathan Paye-Layleh, paid her a courtesy visit.

The Liberian leader, who is an Ex-Officio of the Board of Governors of the Institute, said tackling youth unemployment in post-war Liberia is achievable only if programs like the ones on BWI are given greater attention and support by the government.

The President called for a concerted and coordinated effort between her office, the Ministry of Education and the Alumni Association to achieve her desire to take the BWI technical and vocational program to another level during her second term.

Earlier, Mr. Paye-Layleh briefed the President concerning joint initiatives by the Alumni Association and the BWI administration, under Principal Mulbah Jackollie, to keep the torch of the Institute burning.

Founded in 1929, BWI has trained thousands of middle-level technicians in various disciplines, including Auto-Mechanics, Building Trades, Electricity, Electronics Agriculture, and Bookkeeping and Accounting.

Efforts are underway to elevate the Institute to a degree-granting college; the current technical program will then serve as a feeder for the college program.
